Ennis knew that no matter what he said or did Jack had made his mind, so without another world he allowed the other man to drag him across the parking lot. He took this time to have a better look at his surrounding, almost every vehicle was fancier than anything Ennis had ever seen before, answering any questions about the people that bought in here. Thinking over the whole situation he wondered how someone like Jack would end up in a place like this one. Jack who was a happy-go-lucky guy, surrounded by rich and boring people was not an idea that would have ever crossed his mind.
Yet he felt glad that his cowboy was doing so well, then there was that possessive jealousy that Jack had apparently moved on without him so well. A feeling he was doing his best to ignore completely. His thoughts returned to reality quickly, when Jack came to a stop next to an unfamiliar truck. The truck itself wasn’t as fancy as the others they had passed on their way over, but it was a great improvement over what Jack had driven before.
Jack himself grinned like a Cheshire cat and moved to open his door, Ennis moved to the passenger side and followed Jack inside the car. “So what do you think?” Ennis had to admit that the car was in great condition, he simply nodded toward Jack who wasn’t fully paying attention while he started the motor. Ennis wasn’t completely sure when Jack was planning to take them, but as he finally realized he was alone with the other cowboy his face lit bright red.
Even back in the office any knew there were people outside the door, but now he was alone with Jack moved from a mild busy road into an empty one. Time passed quickly and Jack reminded silent, Ennis gave him looks at every minute, but reminded quiet. It was strange to see Jack so silent, guessing that he wasn’t going to be the one breaking the silence this time. Ennis moved to say something, to his luck thought Jack was quicker than him and finally spoke up.
“Is really hard to believe you are here. I searched for you for such a long time, but I don’t want to talk about that. This place is great, probably your type, there is hardly anyone there during the week.” The rest of the way moved quicker as Jack continued to speak about his life. He had gone back to his parents and not even a week after had left for the rodeo. It had been there where Jack had met Lauren and the two had become close friends.
It had been Lauren’s idea for them to marry, she wanted to shut her father about the subject and Jack was in need of a stable job. Rodeo had broken a few things and he wouldn’t last much longer on the game anyway. Jack decided to avoid telling how he had returned the following summer to Aguirre’s in hopes that Ennis would be there. The whole experience had been a sour one and he had no wishes for it to ruin this reunion. The ride felt to the two of them like they were back on Brokeback, simply talking about the lives, while watching the sky.
The ride itself finally came to an end before a small pub close to the road. Ennis wasn’t sure how long they had traveled, but it must have been over an hour. Yet the trip had felt short for him, been with Jack brought good memories that he had thought lost. Jack happiness was also affecting him, he had never imagined he would feel this glad to have moved to Texas. His fear was by now almost gone, even if it would return later.
Ennis was simply far too happy to be next to his Jack again, to pay much attention to the storm forming in the sky. The two made their way into the badly lit place, far into one of the corners where a petty waiter served them their drinks and walked off to talk with another costumer sitting far from them. Ennis and Jack not sat across from each other, beers in hands and eyes fixed on each other. It had been a great deal of time since they had shared a moment like this, their hasty and painful goodbye back in 1963.
Ennis had always found it difficult to openly communicate with others, but as he sat here across from his friend, if he dared to call Jack that. In truth something in the back of his head kept reminding him, that Jack in his heart was more than a simply friend. An angry voice to be truthful, one that reminded him too much of that of his father thought. He found it quite easy to just sit and hear what Jack had to say and even found himself talking back in many occasion, how the other cowboy did it was completely unknown to Ennis.
Their conversation continued for the reminder of the morning and well into the afternoon, those around the bar left and others came. But no one disturbed the two men sitting in the back, the waitress would simply come and serve them new drinks and go back to her job. She was already on her late fifties and held no interest on the two of many costumers that entered the place.
When Ennis finally looked out of into the window, he noticed the darkness that had settled in around them. For a moment Ennis thought that unnoticed to them, their conversation had gone into the night hours. But a quick look into the clock told him wrong, it was still too early for the sun to have settled, it had been simply hidden behind storm clouds. Ennis paid no attention to it at first, but no long after thunder and lighting lit up the skies. The rain purred down, hiding the world from them.
It was difficult to even look few steps ahead of you, the darkness itself was already worsening the situation. Deciding that it was best to leave now, Jack paid of the bill against Ennis wishes. Thought Ennis knew that the money he carried would not be enough. Jack was the one to lead into the car, with Ennis close behind his heal. Even in the short run, be the time they made it, their bodies were soaking wet.
Both couldn’t help to laugh at the situation, it was a huge reminder of similar incidents when they were working up in Brokeback. Starting the car, went at least quickly. Both men were glad that Jack wasn’t driving his old car, the vehicle would have probably broken down on them right there. Yet as they moved into the road, it became clear that their luck wasn’t as big as they had hoped. The rain continued to pour down, now even stronger than before. Thankfully to their situation the road was lacking any other moving car, which at least helped them avoid an incident.
Their trip didn’t last long thought, not even half an hour into the road they knew they had to find a good stop to past the worse of the rain. Luck hit them again and sooner than they had hoped, they found themselves in a small stop, with motel and what appeared to be a small cafe. They made their way to the later, hoping to have some warm drinks. The rain did not went away quickly thought, seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into full hours.
Before Ennis knew it he found himself calling Alma, explaining that he would be arriving much later than expected. The situation back there wasn’t any better, apparently the rain was covering them also. Ennis took a deep breath, he felt bad for leaving Alma and the girls alone with the rain, but was glad that they at least were under a safe roof and well looked after. Not that Ennis rejected his current company, been around Jack was as enjoyable as he remembered. He returned to the table they were sharing, as Jack called to inform his Lauren about the current situation and how he wouldn’t be making it back to work today.
